Many reasons why the Takao Shiotsuka Atelier design thes Shigemi home with unsual shape. First was the wish to protect the facades, which are clad in wooden boards, from the rain.Another was to create the feeling of a spacious interior without actually increasing the ground space available.Additionally, continuity with the landscape was a goal. The access road slopes up toward the house, the embankment falls away on one side and rises on the other. So instead of standardized 90angles,the architects instead opted for sloped facades. the clients run a timber company and wished to fill the home, instead and out, with their company’s product.Their original suggestion was to create wide eaves as a necessity for protecting the fine wood of the facades from the elements. Instead, the architects proposed tilting the perimeter walls outward, thus creating a unified shape that fulfilled the function of eaves,This exterior treatment has the additional advantage of broadening perspective within the home as well. The total area of the ceiling is 130m2,while that of the floor space is 100m2.
